In olden times a fearless batyr* lived in the Ural mountains. "My arms are so strong thai I can do anything I want to," the batyr boasted. "You had better keep your big mouth shut or else the mountain spirit will punish you severely," cautioned him the older people. "I am scared of none and nothing," persisted the batyr.

Hardly had he uttered those words, that from underneath came terrifying roar and rumble. In a little while a monstrous bear emerged in front of the batyr. A ruthless fight began; pummeling each other they both got deeply stuck in the earth. Only die bear's ears and the batyr's torso remained visible without. At that very moment they turned into stones and have rested there ever since.
